This two-hour credit bearing course is usually taken during the sophomore year. It serves as one official “Port of Entry” into the Health Professions program at Wheaton College. The Health Professions Seminar/Internship (Science 229) is offered during the spring semester and provides opportunities to:

- Study contemporary issues in healthcare and hear from health professionals

- Investigate the nature of the chosen health profession through a clinical internship (shadowing)

- Learn what is expected of a health care professional and engage in professional development

- Engage in self-assessment for career definition and clarification

- Recognize the unique role of a Christian practitioner in a context of diversity and globalization

Liberal Arts/Nursing Major (LA/N)

Pre-Nursing Students: (L to R) Danielle Linton, Jennifer Binger,
Mary Doleshal, & Molly Allen

Students in pre-nursing at Wheaton College may choose to major in Liberal Arts/Nursing (LA/N). The Liberal Arts/Nursing major (LA/N) is a 3/2 program. Three years are spent at Wheaton College fulfilling the general education requirements and completing basic science courses. The student then transfers to one of our nursing school affiliates for two years (spending the senior year in absentia). Wheaton College has affiliation agreements with five NLN-accredited premier schools of nursing.

Nursing School Affiliates:

- Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing - Case Western Reserve University:
Cleveland, Ohio

- Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing - Emory University: Atlanta, Georgia

- Rush University College of Nursing - Chicago, Illinois

- Vanderbilt University School of Nursing - Nashville, Tennessee

- Johns Hopkins University, School of Nursing - Baltimore, Maryland

Students completing the Liberal Arts/Nursing program will receive two degrees—a Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree from Wheaton College and the appropriate nursing degree for the clinical program completed (BSN, MSN, ND) from the nursing school affiliate.

Students who do not choose the Liberal Arts/Nursing major will need to complete the pre-requisites for nursing school while pursuing their major of choice (four years at Wheaton).

For further information about the LA/N major consult the Wheaton College On-line Catalog

Pre-Health Professions Club
With forty regular members, the Pre-Health Professions Club, also known as Sigma Delta Pi, is having a positive impact on future health professionals and present patients both here on campus and in the greater Chicago area. Within an intense, focused group of students, the club provides a sense of community that represents equal measures of commiseration and encouragement. Peer Mentoring and the senior panel are good examples of the club’s purpose among the student body. During this time older students pass on the wisdom they have gained from experience to the younger students, helping pave the way for another class to make it through the challenges of a pre-med curriculum.

Beyond the walls of Wheaton College, club members are actively engaging their mandate to Christian service along a variety of health care related avenues, including running a blood drive for local hospitals and volunteering in a inner city clinic in Chicago. The club is not designed to place another burden on the backs of already overwhelmed students. Instead our purpose is to serve as a resource for students looking towards a career in the health professions, and to be available to whatever extent the particular student desires to take advantage of what the club has to offer. Sigma Delta Pi is a vital, integrative part of the pre-health professions community here at Wheaton.
