Overseas Programs

  • Human Needs and Global Resources
The Human Needs and Global Resources (HNGR) Program challenges students to confront the causes and consequences of poverty, hunger, and oppression in the Third World from an interdisciplinary perspective and a biblical framework. This is the context in which students study the theory, principles, and practices of development, and in which they formulate a Christian response to the issues facing the globe and its peoples. The program's curriculum includes interdisciplinary course work on campus and a six-month off-campus internship in Africa, Asia, or Latin America with an organization involved in holistic development.

  • Asia
The program is open to all and is part of the interdisciplinary Asian Studies major. It is an academic study of the dynamic Asian cultural traditions and of their role in modern world. The overseas study occurs each May for about four weeks and includes courses in history, religion, and philosophy with related lectures and field trips. Each year there is a different study center for this program rotating among such places as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul, and Penang. The courses focus on the background, thought, and contemporary cultures of these locations and their surrounding region. The program provides an in-depth and firsthand introduction to Asian culture.
